What is the Environmental Knowledge Lodge?
The Environmental Knowledge Lodge (EKL) is where the community science that is collected by River Guardians is securely stored, protected and preserved. Communities only have access to their own information.
The EKL database is also called a GeoHub, where information is stored and analysed for community use. The data stored on the GeoHub can assist communities with planning or resources development, and can protect traditional knowledge and other environmental data for future generations. The information stored in the GeoHub can also assist communities who are working with third parties like government, industry or researchers.
Community Guardians, Youth Guardians and Staff Guardians can input observations, environmental data, photos and video to the GeoHub using an app through a smartphone, tablet or computer. Learn more about how to contribute to the GeoHub by clicking here: Become a River Guardian
Who has Access to the Information in the GeoHub?
Each Matawa member First Nation has access to its own data in the GeoHub. Communities may choose to share data with each other, or give another First Nation, organization, or individual, access to some, or all of their community’s GeoHub data. Each community can decide for itself who will see the information that has been contributed by their River Guardians to the database. The information will be password protected and secure so that each community can use the data and analytics as it sees fit.
