Healing is a land-based process. the Making Ground River Systems within the homelands of Ginoogaming First Nation is the heart of the Wiisiniin Zaagi’igan area which is a significant area to the people of Ginoogaming. It begins at the community on the shores of Long Lake and flows south through the immediate traditional territory, emptying into the Kenogamisis River system. This area is significant for many reasons, both culturally for ceremonial purposes and has a wealth of biodiversity. Calvin Taylor, the Lands and Resource Department Manager and Environmental Guardian for Ginoogaming First Nation knows this well. That is why he has been influential in the process of building a Healing Camp in this area to pass along Ginoogaming’s Traditional Knowledge and provide a land based space for community members to connect with the land and heal. The On-going use and protection of the waterways within Wiisiniin Zaagi’igan by the community will allow for the maintaining, restoring and rebuilding of relationships to the lands and waters and ultimately providing inspiration to our emerging environmental Guardians.
With years of capacity building underway and continued efforts to formally launch a Guardians program in the community in a bigger way, Ginoogaming is pleased to announce the formal launch of their Guardians Program which is supported and guided by the Lands and Resource Department and especially Calvin Taylor who directs the program and inspires future Guardians.
